How to get ready for a video visit

A simple checklist to help your telehealth visit go smoothly, from testing your tech to writing down your questions.

The day before

  • Check the link. Find the email or text with your visit link. Save it where you can find it.
  • Test your device. Make sure your camera, microphone, and speaker work. Many clinics offer a test link.
  • Charge up. Plug in your phone, tablet, or laptop.
  • Write it down. List your symptoms, when they started, and any questions.
  • Gather your medicines. Keep the bottles nearby, or make a list with the names and doses.

Right before the visit

  • Find a quiet, private spot with good light in front of you.
  • Join 5 to 10 minutes early.
  • Have a pen and paper ready.
  • If you use a home device, like a blood pressure cuff or scale, keep it close.

During the visit

  • Start with your most important question.
  • Ask the clinician to repeat anything that is unclear.
  • Before you finish, say back the plan in your own words.

If the tech fails

Stay calm. Call the clinic's phone number. Many visits can switch to a phone call.

When video is not the right fit

A video visit is not for emergencies. If you have chest pain, trouble breathing, or signs of a stroke, call 911.
